[Also in Division F2] The glass-coated separable parts of an agitator are drawn together in fluid-tight sealing relationship without the use of torsion which might fracture the coating. As shown a cap-nut 16, sleeve 42, disc springs 72, piston 56 and vent 60 are assembled finger-tight on a draw bolt 50, and the agitator blades 14 placed over the sleeve, which is inserted into a bore 23 in the lower end 12 of the drive shaft and secured therein by engagement of the threads 24, 46. Springs 72 are then compressed by introducing hydraulic fluid under pressure with chamber 68, and the agitator parts drawn together again finger-tight by means of capnut 16. On release of the hydraulic pressure, the springs 72 place the bolt 50 under tension and the sealing surfaces 26, 30, 38 are brought into abutting engagement with an axial pressure of about 10,000 p.s.i. The drive is transmitted through a key 44. In a modification (see Fig. 3, not shown) the limb of the lower agitator blade is formed as a cap-nut. Leakage detection. A coloured liquid or a gas may be introduced under pressure into the spaces 92 behind the sealing surfaces by way of passage 88 and over the surface of sleeve 42, failure of the sealing surfaces being indicated by seapage. Leakage tests may be made during operation by introducing a gas down a bore 94 in the shaft and watching for bubbles. |
