A chuck or arbor which grips a workpiece or tool by distorting a sleeve by applying pressure to a non-compressible oil or grease contained in a chamber, comprises a visual pressure indicating device. In the embodiment described, a chuck comprises a body 1 having a bore 3 in which is press-fitted and screw 18 retained a sleeve 4 having an external groove 9 which defines with the bore 3 a chamber 11. The chamber 11 is filled through a port 22 in a flange 2 of the body and is pressurized by a screw plunger 43. The visual pressure indicator (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) comprises a spring-biased plunger 54 having a stem (61). When the chamber is pressurized the end of the stem protrudes from the flange 2. The protruding end of the stem may be marked, e.g. painted. |
