PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply produce the corresponding aromatic nitrile compound by oxidizing either one kind of a new benzyl alcohol compound, a benzyl ether compound and a benzaldehyde compound or a mixture thereof under mild conditions without requiring a specific reacting apparatus and reacting agent. SOLUTION: The method for producing the aromatic nitrile compound represented by general formula (3) comprises reacting either one kind of the benzyl alcohol compound, the benzyl ether compound and the benzaldehyde compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein X is a hydroxymethyl group or a formyl group or the like; n is an integer of 1-6; Rs are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or the like) or a mixture thereof with a bromine oxide represented by general formula (2) (wherein M is a hydrogen atom or a metal atom; m is an integer of 1-3) in the presence of an acid catalyst and ammonia in an amount of equivalent weight or above.
