A method and a system of reducing the dead zones in a third-generation mobile telecommunication system (UMTS). When a mobile station MS in communication with a base station BS1 gives rise to dead zones on the uplinks of a base station BS2, then according to the invention, criteria on the uplink and/or the downlink between the mobile station MS and the base station BS1 are defined which, if one or other of the two are not complied with, triggers a procedure of radio link failure in the mobile station MS. The communication between the mobile station MS and the base station BS1 is then released. The power transmitted on the uplink by the mobile station MS then becomes zero and the degradation of the radio coverage of the cell of the base station BS2 due to the mobile station MS disappears.
