PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optically correct distortion of images formed by two-dimensional scanning of luminous flux. SOLUTION: A retina scanning type display apparatus has a polarizing means 16 for polarizing the luminous flux from a light source 11, a scanning optical system 17 for imaging the luminous flux polarized by the polarizing means, and an ocular optical system 272 for leading the polarized luminous flux imaged by the scanning optical system to the observer's eyes. An incident direction of the luminous flux from the light source to the polarizing means is oblique to at least one of two polarized axes in the polarizing means. The scanning optical system contains optical elements 241b, 241c tilted and/or shifted to an incident side of the luminous flux from the light source to the polarizing means or a reverse side thereof in relation to a center axis in the two-dimensional polarizing range of the luminous flux by the polarizing means.
