A drilling method and drilling mud composition suitable for a gas and oil field drilling applications. The drilling mud formulation comprises a starch in an amount of about 2 pounds per barrel or more. The starch is a modified potato, waxy or tapioc a starch. Cuttings obtained during drillings may be disposed of by on-land spreading a t the drilling site.
