<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structurally simple pointing device that does not need a tablet of a digitizer, etc., a scanner including the pointing device, a robot and portable communication equipment. <P>SOLUTION: This pointing device is provided with a light source for emitting light, a ball that rotates according to the movement of the entire device and an optical image sensor for detecting the movement of the device with an image.
