PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize design conditions of a register ring in response to required functions and improve durability and operation stability of a chain tensioner. SOLUTION: The register ring 7 is made of a steel material with tensile strength of 1,000 to 3,500 N/mm<SP>2</SP>. An engaged width of the register ring 7 against connecting grooves 33a to 33d of a plunger 3 is set within a range of 30 to 50% of a wire diameter of the register ring 7. Further, when the register ring 7 is enlarged in diameter among the connecting grooves 33a to 33d while sliding the register ring, bending stress generated on the register ring 7 is set within a range of 500 to 1,700 N/mm<SP>2</SP>.
