PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas seal device for a rotary drum whose sealing performance can be held good even in the case where a gap of a certain minor dimension exists between the sealing surfaces of a rotation side sealing member and a stationary side sealing member. SOLUTION: While the rotary drum 11 is in rotation, a gap of a certain minor dimension may be generated between the sealing surface of the stationary side sealing member 21 and the sealing surface of the rotation side sealing member 22. From a gas container B, an inert gas with a higher pressure than the inner gas in the rotary drum 11 is supplied to between the two sealing surfaces. Even if any gap is formed between them, the inert gas seals inside the rotary drum 11 from the outside. Thereby the sealing performance of the rotary drum 11 can be held.
