PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glycolic acid copolymer having high heat stability, scarcely causing discoloration even when subjected to melt molding and processing, having excellent quality, and capable of giving high barrier properties and sufficient mechanical strength to a molded product, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This glycolic acid copolymer has a weight-average molecular weight of ≥50,000, contains glycolic acid units in an amount of not less than 80 mol% but less than 95 mol%, and satisfies the following requisites [1] and [2]: [1] hydroxycarboxylic acid units other than the glycolic acid units are contained in an amount of 5.0-20.0 mol% and an average chain length of the hydroxycarboxylic acid units other than the glycolic acid units is 1.00 to 1.50; and [2] diglycolic acid units are contained in an amount of 0-0.10 mol%.
