Disclosed is a distributor or hopper which is part of a cigarette production machine and is used for processing the tobacco during the creation of a continuous tobacco strand. Said distributor comprises a metering system which prepares the tobacco for producing the tobacco strand. At least one sifter (15) is provided for removing undesired components such as foreign matters, stems, or ribs from the tobacco. Said sifter (15) is arranged upstream of the metering system of the distributor relative to the direction of operation, particularly outside the distributor, such that sifted tobacco is fed into the distributor.
