PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wrinkle seaming detection device of paper sheets hardly influenced by a noise or conveyance flutter of the paper sheets, capable of detecting wrinkle seaming highly accurately. SOLUTION: An image input part 1 inputs an image of a negotiable paper S and stores it in an image memory 6. A smoothing processing part 8 removes a noise or the like other than the wrinkle seaming by applying smoothing filter processing to the inputted image in the image memory 6. A characteristic quantity calculation part 9 applies differentiation processing in the perpendicular direction to the wrinkle seaming direction relative to the image subjected to the smoothing filter processing, and determines the variance by performing prescribed operation to the acquired differentiated image, and uses the determined variance as a feature variable.
