PURPOSE: A rack and pinion steering gear having a powder metal bushing is provided to prevent the rack bar from being separated from the pinion gear by fixing a retention ring in a groove of an input shaft and inserting a capture washer between the retention ring and a roller bearing. CONSTITUTION: A rack and pinion steering gear(10) is composed of a housing(12), and helical teeth(60) of a pinion gear(54) are engaged with teeth of a rack bar(42). A shaft(86) is connected to the pinion gear, and axial force is generated in rotating the pinion gear. The pinion gear is rotated by rotating the shaft, and an assembly is inserted between the shaft and the housing and composed of a first snap ring(142) mounted to the shaft and a second snap ring(144) mounted to the housing. A seal(146) preventing leak of fluid from the housing is inserted between the first snap ring and the second snap ring. A bushing(108) is engaged with the first snap ring to rotate the shaft to the housing and to restrict axial displacement of the pinion gear by axial force applied to the pinion gear.
