An open ended spinning machine has spinning stations, each with a first air filter cleaned as required by presentation of an air suction inlet. During the cleaning operation air is diverted by a valve (5) through a second filter. The valve esp. is linked to a control unit (4) that operates in response to a command signal triggered by a drop in filter air pressure to a pre-determined value. Following the cleaning process, the valve reverts to the normal operating mode. The cleaning unit serves a series of spinning stations forming part of a spinning assembly, and moves from station to station as required. The assembly has a second suction hose (7) with two filters (35', 20') operated in conjunction with a second valve (5') and the control unit (4). The two diversion valves (5, 5') are not both simultaneously presented to the station requiring maintenance. The drop in pressure is detected by a pressure sensor (40, 40') which activates the cleaning sequence and filter cleaning unit (9), removing the accumulated fibers.
