The system uses a key which can transmit coded signals controlling door lock and vehicle immobilisation to the vehicle. An onboard management unit has ROM which also contains the door lock and immobilisation codes. If the key is lost, a smart card (17) containing the door lock and immobilisation codes may be entered into a reader (20) which is available through an authorised dealer. A personal pass number is entered into the reader through a keyboard (22) and enables a coded radio signal to be sent to release the vehicle doors. The reader is then connected by wire to the onboard management unit and a learning mode started which will enable a new key to be used.
