A broadcaster (2) simultaneously transmits information elements (IEs), along with data describing them, via a network (1) to all user set-top boxes (8). A receiver (3) filters the IEs according to local criteria and then records selected information in a hard disc (5) without user intervention. Preferably the information is stored in an encrypted form and viewing is authorized by a control center (6) which receives details of the IEs that have been stored. The information storage selection criteria may be altered by the user via a presentation selection unit (4).
