Changes in the state of the appliance (8) under observation are converted into events, each one being linked to a description of this event and a time at which this event occurred, the description taking up little memory, or alternatively a combination of a series of events and times is compiled by programming. The events are stored in an event memory (14) in an electronic observation apparatus. Event information is transferred to a central computer system at programmable intervals or once a set event memory limit has been reached or in the event of a certain event being recorded. The state of all the electronically controlled parts or components (e.g. pump, ventilator, gas valve, three-way valve, ignition unit or control unit) in the appliance is monitored by taking current and optionally voltage measurements. The system generates information and advice concerning the running and/or use of appliances or equipment. An electronic observation apparatus is located next to an appliance to be monitored and can communicate via a public communication link such as a (mobile) telephone network and/or the Internet with a central computer system linked to a database.
