Radio receiver for motor vehicle, e.g. car radio, has microcontroller to switch from AM reception to FM band when RDS decoder detects traffic information signals

The receiver has two tuners (110, 120) respectively for AM and FM bands, and a radio data system decoder (140) for broadcast RDS information. A microcontroller (130) causes the FM tuner to scan the broadcast band for stations transmitting RDS signals relating to traffic conditions. Preferably the tuner output is connected to the audio amplifier when an audible announcement (TA flag) is received and decoded information is supplied to a navigation system when a traffic message channel (TMC) signal is detected. An Independent claim is also included for a method of controlling a radio receiver.
