The cell contains a number of intermediate semiconductor layers (3, 4) comprising a mixture of silicon, mercury and silver nitrate. A solar cell comprises an upper electrically conducting layer or mesh (2), a lower electrically conducting layer or mesh (6) and a number of intermediate semiconductor layers comprising a mixture of silicon, mercury and silver nitrate.
