PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a mode spectrum of optical characteristics in main state of polarization of a device under test according to spectral parameters. SOLUTION: The inventive method comprises a first step for determining minimum and maximum envelope values of optical characteristics for a possible polarization state of light incident to a DUT. These minimum and maximum envelope values function, respectively, as a starting point for deriving the mode spectrum of at least one optical characteristics in principal state of polarization of the DUT. The mode spectrum is derived using partial matching of a PSP mode spectrum and the minimum and maximum envelope values. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
