PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for remotely deactivating at least one decoder (1) for accessing multimedia digital data provided by a service operator. SOLUTION: The decoder has a particular identifier (ID) known by the operator. In order to deactivate the decoder using the predetermined identifier (ID), a destruction command for destroying a part of or all software integrated in the decoder is transmitted by the operator through the communication network connected to the decoder by the operator, and the destruction command is addressed to the decoder using the particular identifier (ID) designated by the operator. Further, the decoder is composed of an eraser software module appropriate for erasing a part of or all the software integrated in the decoder when the decoder receives the destruction command addressed to the decoder.
