<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength monitor capable of monitoring accurately the wavelength of a light source, and its reference value setting method. <P>SOLUTION: Light used for wavelength division multiplexing from a wavelength variable light source 1 is branched into three light by a half mirror. The branched light is received as it is by photodiodes PD1-PD3 through a slope filter 7 and an etalon 8. The wavelength used as a grid standard is determined by the slope filter 7, and a fine change thereof is detected by the etalon 8.
