PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for backwashing a filter membrane with ozone-containing water, wherein the backwashing water can be efficiently used by solving the problem that, in a conventional membrane filtration system where the filter membrane is backwashed with ozone-containing water, ozone-containing water which is part of treating water is limited in amount and therefore can not be said to exhibit a sufficient washing effect in spite of a need to maintain a high recovery rate of treating water. SOLUTION: Wastewater of ozone-containing water used in backwashing is subjected to membrane filtration and ozone treatment to reuse the wastewater as ozone-containing water for backwashing. It is also possible to combine this with backwashing with ordinary membrane-treated water and ozone-containing water. The apparatus is provided with an ozone-containing water formation equipment, a backwashing water, a backwashing wastewater storage tank, and a backwashing wastewater membrane filtration equipment.
