<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recorder in which recording operation on the unsuitable surface of a recording medium requiring discrimination between the surface and the back surface is prevented. <P>SOLUTION: The recorder comprises: a means 60 for detecting the density on one surface of a recording medium at a recording medium loading position or in the carrying passage from the loading position to a recording position; a means for judging whether one surface of the recording medium is a suitable recording surface, based on the density detected by the density detecting means 60 and delivering judgment results indicative of whether orientation of the recording surface at the recording position is appropriate based on the judgment results; and a means performing an operation for informing an error when the judging means judges that the orientation of the recording surface at the recording position is inappropriate.
