PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a crosslinked polymer support for solid phase synthesis, having utilizable functional groups, without having high swelling properties. SOLUTION: The method for functionalizing a crosslinked polymer bead includes (a) a process for swelling the bead in a first solvent or a solvent mixture to have a volume of 200-310% based on the initial volume of the bead and (b) a process for contacting the bead with a functionalizing agent in a second solvent or another solvent mixture capable of swelling the bead to have a volume of 200-310% based on the volume of the bead when dried. The functionalized polymer comprising a slightly crosslinked resin is useful as the solid support in a solid phase organic synthesizing method. The use of the functional groups of the resin controls a yield, mobility, use of a raw material, and purity of a product, and therefore is very important in solid phase polymerization.
