A printing plate material is disclosed which comprises a substrate, and provided thereon, an under layer and a porous hydrophilic layer in that order, wherein the under layer has a thickness of from 0.1 to 5.0 mum, contains metal oxide particles A with a particle size of from 1 to 20 nm in an amount of not less than 30% by weight, and has cracks with a groove width of less than 1 mum.
