A surface grid (5) around a tree trunk is supported on an inner flange (6) of a vertical axis metal ring (1) with the lower end of the ring supported on a buried grid disc (4) via an outer flange (2). Any vertical load on the surface grid is thus supported on the buried grid disc preventing compacting of the soil around the root ball. The upper support flange can be a ring of tags secured to the vertical ring either as part of the ring, or clipped into the ring.
