In the manufacture of ribbed separators for electric accumulators resin impregnated sheet material 13 is formed with ribs 13a by passing it between a smooth, stationary strip 12 and a series of transverse laths 7 forming a part of an endless conveyer 6. Pressure from spring loaded plates 15, 15a and acting through a pad 17 on the strip 12 prevents longitudinal movement of the sheet 13 relative to the laths so that, as the spacing of adjacent laths reduces on entering the straight run, excess material is trapped and squeezed in the grips to form solid ribs 13a. The ribbed sheet is passed through two curing ovens before being cut. The sheet material may be impregnated with phenolformaldehyde. Specification 824,025 is referred to. |
