The smoke curtain comprises one or more hollow bodies (1) of elastic foils or woven fabric which only become inflated with compressed air in the event of a fire and are cooled during operation through an air current inside the hollow bodies. The air supply to inflate the foils is through a valve (9) which is opened manually or through a fire warning installation. A permanent outlet air stream flows through a throttle valve. On closing the inlet valve during operation the air is rapidly expelled through the throttle valve, the hollow body deflates and the person can escape.
