PURPOSE: A block copolymer, a polymer electrolyte containing the copolymer, a polymer electrolyte membrane and a catalyst composition containing the polymer electrolyte, and a fuel cell containing the polymer electrolyte membrane or the catalyst composition are provided, to improve a chemical stability such as oxidation resistance, radical resistance, hydrolysis resistance, etc., mechanical strength of membranes, smear fastness and proton conductivity and to enhance the electricity generating property of a fuel cell. CONSTITUTION: The block copolymer comprises at least one segment having an acid group and at least one segment substantially free from an acid group, wherein the segment having an acid group has a repeating unit substituted with an acid group represented by -(Ar1-X1-Ar2-X2)-. In the formula, X1 and X2 are independently O or S; Ar1 and Ar2 are independently an aromatic group represented by the formula 2, 3 or 4. In the formulas 2, 3 and 4, R1 is a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a nitrile group, a nitro group, an amino group, an optionally substituted C1-C10 alkyl group, an optionally substituted C1-C10 alkoxy group, an optionally substituted C6-C10 aryl group, or an optionally substituted C6-C10 aryloxy group; a is an integer of 0-4; b is an integer of 0-6; R1's are identical or different one another and can be combined together if R1's are plural; Y is a direct bond, O, S, or an optionally substituted C1-C6 alkylenedioxy group; n is an integer of 0-2; Y's are identical or different one another if Y's are plural; and both Ar1 and Ar2 are not a group represented by the formula 2 if both X1 and X2 are O. |
