PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic retarder for a vehicle which can improve its cooling performance since its retarder is cooled by jetting air to the retarder from a nozzle according to the working of the retarder, which can avoid the drop of the braking force of the retarder resulting from the temperature rise of the retarder, which can ease the restriction on a braking time, which can cope with frequent or continuous braking thus being able to improve the braking capacity of the electromagnetic retarder, and which can secure high reliability. SOLUTION: In a vehicle which is equipped with an electromagnetic retarder 3 performing the braking by generating an eddy current in a rotor 7 attached to drive shafts 2 and 11 by an electromagnet 6 provided in a stator 4, this electromagnetic retarder device is equipped with a nozzle 14 which jets air to the electromagnetic retarder 3 so as to cool itself, a control valve 17 which is provided in a passage leading specified pressure from an air tank 15 to the nozzle 14, and a control means 25 which controls the opening of the control valve 17 according to the operation of the retarder 3.
