PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal that are correctly separated without erroneously distinguishing between a moving picture part and a still picture part of NTSC composite video signal. SOLUTION: This Y/C separation circuit for inputting an NTSC composite video signal 101 and separating the luminance signal from the carrier chrominance signal is provided with a 2:3 pulldown phase detection circuit 113 for receiving the NTSC composite video signal 101, detecting a boundary line of fields of a received video film and preparing a 2:3 pulldown phase detection signal 114. When video made of one frame of the film continues for three fields, a selection circuit 109 calculates the sum and difference in NTSC composite video signals between the first field and the last field among the three video fields and outputs the sum and the difference as a luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal, respectively.
