Benzotriazole-1-carboxylic acid amides or esters (or thio-ester or substituted methyl compound analogs) (I) are new. Benzotriazoles of formula (I), in the form of racemates, racemic mixtures and pure enantiomers or diastereomers and their mixtures, are new. R1 - R4 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, 6-10C aryl or 6-10C aryloxy; Y' = CO, CS or CH2; Z' = OR5 or NR5R6; or 3-7 membered polymethyleneimino (optionally (i) having a further ring C replaced by O or N, (ii) substituted by 1-4 of 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, (1-4C) alkoxyphenyl, phenyl-(1-4C) alkoxy, halophenyl or halo or (iii) fused with a benzo ring (itself optionally substituted by F, Cl or 1-4C alkyl)); and R5, R6 = 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 6-12C aryl, phenyl-(1-4C) alkyl, 6-10C aryloxy, 5-7C cycloalkyl or benzo-(1,3)-dioxolyl (where aryl is optionally substituted by 1-4 of 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, (1-4C) alkoxyphenyl, halophenyl or halo).
