PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining aryl ethers from phenols and a carbonic diester in high yields without using a material containing a metal element. SOLUTION: The phenols are brought into contact with the carbonic diester in the presence of a catalyst for activating a hydroxy group of the phenols and/or an alkoxy group of the carbonic diester without containing the metal element in constituent elements thereof.
