The invention relates to a device comprising transponders containing data, such as data relating to said device. According to the invention, a device (A; B) is equipped with at least two preferably passive transponders (1, 2, 3; 4, 5) which comprise a memory element and which can be remotely polled. By adapting the number of transponders, it is possible to store limitless amounts of data of all types in the device. A reader is provided which is used to read and assemble the data in a suitable order. In an alternate embodiment, the consistency of one or more sub-assemblies forming a device can be checked automatically. For said purpose, one transponder is fixed to the sub-assembly and said transponder contains the characteristics presented by the sub-assembly, while another transponder which is not fixed to the sub-assembly contains the characteristics to be presented by the sub-assembly. A reader then compares the data from the two transponders and flags any consistency failures.
