PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a sewing machine equipped with an operational panel corresponding to various types of the usage. SOLUTION: The control device is equipped with the operational panel (6) including operational switches (18a-18j) and mounted on a main body of the sewing machine in either the vertical or the horizontal direction and a detecting means (20) provided on a main body of the operational panel and detecting the direction in which the operational panel is mounted. A long and thin display part (19) is provided on the operational panel, and is switched either to display figures (M1-M4) representing the shapes of unit patterns individually for every information set for the unit pattern on the display part or to display a figure (T) representing the unit patterns in the connected manner on the display part in order to make a user recognize at least either the positional relationship or the relationship of the sizes between the unit patterns depending on a result on the direction, the vertical or the horizontal, determined by the detecting means.
