METHOD OF MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM, AND OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical fiber preform by which the optical fiber preform having a desired preform diameter and hole diameters can be easily formed.

SOLUTION: The optical fiber preform is manufactured by the manufacturing method including: a process for preparing a glass preform 11 with holes 14 each having a diameter larger than the predetermined diameter of each hole 4 to be formed in the optical fiber preform 1; and a drawing process for drawing so that the diameter of each hole 14 becomes the predetermined diameter. Thereby, it becomes possible to contract the diameter of each hole. Accordingly, it becomes unnecessary to directly form each hole having a small diameter in the glass preform 11, and the hole diameter 14 to be formed in the glass preform 11 may be a diameter which is convenient for a working. It is preferable that the diameter of the glass preform 11 is reduced gradually in two or more steps for preventing crushing or deformation of the holes 14 in drawing.
