PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a storage battery in which discharge of gas can be carried out smoothly without narrowing the spacing between the vertical main ribs and wherein increase of internal pressure of the battery is not brought about. SOLUTION: This is the separator for the storage battery in which many columns of parallel vertical main ribs 2 are arranged on the whole face on the side contacting the positive electrode plate, and many columns of exhaust grooves 3 extending in parallel to these vertical main ribs 2 are provided between the vertical main ribs 2. Furthermore, many columns of exhaust grooves 4 extending in parallel to the above vertical main ribs 2 are provided also on the face at which the vertical main ribs are not arranged.
