摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control outgoing light quantity for a wide range with less light loss in a lighting device, a projection-type display device having the lighting device, and a liquid crystal element suitable as a light quantity adjustment of the lighting device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element 5 which has a liquid crystal macromolecule composite layer where macromolecules 152 oriented in one direction are dispersed in a state where they are separated in liquid crystals 151 between a pair of substrates, and in which the liquid crystals 151 and the macromolecules 152 are oriented in a direction where they are almost aligned or a direction different from each other in accordance with presence/no presence of an electric field applied to the liquid crystal macromolecule composite layer is arranged between a polarized light conversion means 4d aligning the a polarizing direction of illumination light in one direction, and light modulation devices 22-24. The polarizing direction of light which is made incident on the liquid crystal element 5 from the polarized light conversion means 4d is aligned in an orientation direction of the macromolecules 152 of the liquid crystal element 5.
