PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optimum fixability according to a heat quantity accumulated in a rotary fixing means 40 in an image forming apparatus having the rotary fixing means 40 which thermally fixes a toner image t formed on a recording material 410. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes: an accumulated heat quantity estimating means 601 A which estimates the heat quantity accumulated in the fixing means 40; an idle rotation means 601 C which idly rotates the fixing means when the fixing means reaches a fixable state; 422 M; and an idle rotation period determination means 601 B which determines a period during which the fixing means 40 is idly rotated. The idle rotation period is determined based upon the accumulated heat quantity estimated by the accumulated heat quantity estimating means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
