PHENOLIC POLYMER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive manufacturing process of a phenolic polymer which does not need an expensive enzyme as a catalyst. SOLUTION: The phenolic polymer is obtained by oxidizing a phenol of the general formula in the presence of a transition metal complex as a catalyst using a peroxide as an oxidizing agent. In the general formula, R1, R2, R3, R4and R5are each independently hydrogen, a halogen, a hydrocarbon group, a substituted hydrocarbon group, a hydrocarbon oxy group, an amino group, a substituted amino group or hydroxy group, and at least two of R1, R3and R5are hydrogens.
