A method for treating or preventing an elevated blood lipid level-related disease such as hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, angina pectoris, stroke and hepatic diseases in a mammal, which comprises administering thereto an effective amount of a cinnamic acid derivative of formula Ia or Ib, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof:wherein,R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are independently H, OH or C1-4 alkoxy; andR6 is H, C1-4 alkyl group, or C5-7 cycloalkyl group having one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of OH, alkoxy and carboxy groups.
