FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the improved method for preparing alpha,alpha--dimethylphenylacetic acid without using the enhanced pressure wherein alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzylcyanide is converted to the corresponding carboxylic acid salt in the presence of water, sodium hydroxide and C4-alcohol and/or C5-alcohol at temperature above 100 C followed by preparing alpha,alpha-dimethylphenylacetic acid by addition of acid.
