PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate troubles, e.g. deterioration of image quality or glitch of output clock, when an image reader is driven with a plurality of frequencies. SOLUTION: Switching can be made between a low clock rate and a high clock rate by means of switches 114, 119, and the like. When a clock is switched, a CPU turns on a stop flag to stop IPCLK temporarily and turns off the stop flag after switching to resume clock supply. Shading correction, detection of a document and reading in color mode are performed at a low clock rate whereas reading in monochromatic mode is performed at a high clock rate. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
