<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel metal polyhydride cluster catalyzing the hydrogenation of nitrogen or carbon dioxide. <P>SOLUTION: This metal polyhydride cluster is represented by formula (1) or (2). In the formulae, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each an alkyl group; X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>and X<SP>3</SP>are each a metal selected from the group consisting of Ru, Ir, Rh, Os, Fe, Co, Re, Mo, W, Ti, Zr and Hf; X<SP>4</SP>and X<SP>5</SP>are each a IIIa group metal; (m) is 4; (n) is 3 or 5 and is decided according to the number of electrons of the metal.
