<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit for a liquid crystal display, whose light quantity is increased by incident light from four sides of a light guide plate fixing a light guide plate without shortening the light source, and to provide a liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 1 comprises a light guide plate 6 from whose four side ends the light is emitted into its inside, is emitted out one wide plane of it propagating inside it ; a tubular light source 4 which is disposed along and near each light incident plane of the light guide plane 6, and a chassis 8 which contains every optical member constituting the backlight unit 3, wherein a recess 11 corresponding a size of the light guide plate 6 is formed in a bottom of the chassis 8, and a part of under portion of the light guide plate 6 is set in the recess 11. Disposition of current pillar shape fixing member for fixing the light guide plate 6 lengthwise and breadthwise shortening a fluorescent lamp, is not necessary, because the light guide plate 6 can be fixed lengthwise and breadthwise as under portion of a side end surface of the light guide plate 6 contacts with a side surface of the recess 11 of the chassis 8. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
