The moving platen(6) and a crosshead(3) are each linked by at least one connecting rod(4) and a swiveling joint(5) to a toggle lever. Connecting rods connected to different toggle levers cross over each other. Connecting rods(4) are S- or C-shaped. Swiveling joints(5) are at the sides of the crosshead(3). When the toggle levers are fully extended the crosshead lies between them. A hydraulic piston and cylinder unit or an electric linear drive moves the crosshead between two end positions. Alternatively a geared rack or spindle powered by am electric or hydraulic motor is employed. Each toggle lever has two arms(2) connected by a joint(11) and the swiveling joint linking a connecting rod and toggle lever is offset from the toggle lever arm joint. Swiveling joints are located on the central axis(12) of each toggle lever arm. Connection between a connecting rod and the crosshead is on the opposite side of the latter from the toggle lever with which the other end connects.
