PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new pH indicator and to provide a method for measuring a pH using the same and the pH indicator for easily measuring the pH particularly in a cell. SOLUTION: A binding form of a base pair between chains of a single-strand polynucleotide or between chains of double-strand polynucleotide is changed in response to the pH, and one chain of the single-strand polynucleotide or the double-strand polynucleotide has a signal generating compound. Further, the other chain of the the single-strand polynucleotide or the double-strand polynucleotide has a signal control compound. When the signal generating compound is brought into adjacent contact with the signal control compound by the change of the coupling form of the base pair, the signal control compound is used as the pH indicator for controlling a signal of the signal generating compound.
