PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purityα-oxocarboxylic acid ester andα-oxocarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing theα-oxocarboxylic acid ester using (i) a 1,2-diol or (ii) the 1,2-diol and an alcohol as starting raw materials comprises (1) a first process for producing anα-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester by reacting (i) the 1,2-diols with each other or (ii) the 1,2-diol with the alcohol in the presence of oxygen and (2) a second process for producing theα-oxocarboxylic acid ester by subjecting theα-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester to oxidation-dehydrogenation reaction in the presence of oxygen. The method for producing theα-oxocarboxylic acid using the 1,2-diol and the alcohol as the starting raw materials is a method comprising, after the second process, (3) a third process for producing theα-oxocarboxylic acid by hydrolyzing theα-oxocarboxylic acid ester.
