PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a secondary olefin, by which the desired high quality secondary olefin is stably and efficiently obtained, while reducing the effect of a poisoning substance to a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing the secondary olefin comprises the first process for washing a 4C hydrocarbon mixture containing an unsaturated hydrocarbon and having a low degree of unsaturation with water and then reacting the water-washed mixture with a primary alcohol in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin to obtain the 4C hydrocarbon mixture free from alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers and tertiary olefins, the second process for distilling off a distillate comprising the 4C hydrocarbon mixture free from the tertiary olefins from the 4C hydrocarbon mixture free from the alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers and the tertiary olefins, the third process for selectively hydrogenating the distillate obtained in the second process in a gas phase with a fixed bed reactor filled with a supported palladium catalyst subjected to a reducing treatment, and the fourth process for distilling off the higher boiling point components and the lower boiling point components than boiling point of the secondary olefin from the hydrogenated distillate obtained in the third process.
